How we check it
We load the public profile URL and look for the profile payload TikTok embeds in the page, rather than trusting the status code on its own.
TikTok sometimes serves a 200 page that says the account doesn't exist. That's exactly why we read the body — a status code alone would call a taken handle free.

Common questions
How often can I change a TikTok username?
TikTok allows a change once every 30 days. That is long enough that a name you picked in a hurry is a name you live with for a month, which is a good argument for checking the whole set before you claim any of it.
Is a TikTok handle the same as the display name?
No. The display name is free text and can be changed whenever you like. The username is the address — tiktok.com/@yourname — and it is the part worth matching to your domain and your other platforms.
Why is a name free on TikTok but taken everywhere else?
TikTok is younger than most of the platforms we check, so its namespace is less picked over. That cuts both ways: a name free only on TikTok is a name you will be renaming later, which is the expensive kind of free.
