Reddit username checker

Check a Reddit username — and read, first, what that answer is actually worth.

Enter a brand name, username, handle or domain.

Checked alongside your domain and every other platform.

The rules

  • 3 to 20 characters.
  • Letters, numbers, underscores and hyphens.
  • The name is shown as u/yourname and lives at reddit.com/user/yourname.

How we check it

Where we hold Reddit API credentials we ask Reddit's own Data API, which answers plainly. Without them we fall back to the public profile JSON.

Be aware that Reddit closed self-serve API registration in November 2025, and it declines most anonymous requests from data-center addresses — which is where this site runs. So the honest expectation is that the Reddit row often reports Unknown with a link to check yourself, rather than a verdict. We would rather tell you that here than have you read Unknown as a bug. A 403 in particular is never treated as free: Reddit uses it both for suspended accounts, where the name is still held, and for traffic it simply won't serve.

Reddit is a search result, not a channel

Most brands never post on Reddit, and most brands still get discussed there. The reason to hold the username is that reddit.com/user/yourname is a public page that will rank for your name whether you use it or not — better it be yours.

Hyphens are allowed here and almost nowhere else

Reddit accepts both underscores and hyphens. That flexibility is a trap when you are picking one name for every platform: a Reddit-shaped handle frequently won't fit Instagram, TikTok or Bluesky. Pick for the strictest platform and Reddit will accept it.

Common questions

Can I change a Reddit username?

No. Reddit does not let you rename an account — the only route is to create a new one and start its history from zero. Of everything we check, this is the one where getting it right first time matters most.

Does a deleted Reddit account free up the name?

No. Deleted usernames are not returned to the pool. If someone took it and left in 2013, it is still gone.

Why won't the Reddit check give a straight answer?

Reddit requires registered API access for automated lookups and closed self-serve registration to new applicants in November 2025. Working around that would mean disguising our requests, which we won't do. So we ask the supported way when we can, and say Unknown when we can't.
