The rules

  • Up to 30 characters.
  • Letters, numbers, full stops and underscores only — no spaces, no hyphens.
  • Case doesn't matter: @WhisperLook and @whisperlook are the same handle.

How we check it

We request the public profile page and read what comes back. A real 404 means nothing is using the handle.

Instagram is the strictest of the big platforms about automated requests, so it often answers with a login wall instead of a page. When that happens we report Unknown rather than guess, and hand you the link.

Threads comes with it

A Threads handle is an Instagram handle. Claiming one takes the other, so check them together — we do.

Dots are cheap, and cost you

whisper.look is technically free more often than whisperlook. It is also harder to say out loud, harder to type, and easier to lose to a typo.

Common questions

Why does Instagram so often come back Unknown?

Instagram answers most automated requests with a login wall rather than the profile page, and a login wall tells us nothing about the handle. We could guess from it, but a guess presented as a result is worse than no result, so we report Unknown and give you the link.

Does an inactive Instagram account release its username?

Not on any schedule you can plan around. Instagram's policy allows it to reclaim accounts that have been inactive for a long time, but there is no queue, no notification, and no way to be next in line. Treat a taken handle as taken.

Can I use the same handle on Instagram and Threads?

You have to. A Threads profile is created from an Instagram account and shares its username, so claiming one claims both. That is why we show them as separate rows but check them together.
