What .app is

A generic ending operated by Google, opened in 2018 and unrestricted — you do not need to prove you have an app. Its distinguishing feature is technical: the whole namespace is on the HSTS preload list.

Who it suits

Anything that is genuinely an application rather than a website. It reads clearly, it is far less picked over than .com, and the name you actually wanted is often still free here.

The catch

HSTS preloading means browsers refuse to load any .app address over plain HTTP, before a single request leaves the machine. In practice that is a feature — you were going to use HTTPS anyway — but it removes a fallback you may be used to during local development and early setup. If any part of your stack depends on an unencrypted redirect, find that out before you buy rather than after.

Common questions

Do I need an actual app to register a .app?

No. It is open to anyone for anything; the name is descriptive rather than restrictive.

What does HSTS preloading mean for me?

Every .app domain requires a valid HTTPS certificate before a browser will load it at all — there is no http:// version, even temporarily. Certificates are free and automatic on every mainstream host, so for most people this is one setting rather than a problem.

Is .app taken as heavily as .com?

Nothing like it. It is a fraction of the age and a fraction of the size, so short, clear, memorable names are still available in it — which is most of the reason to look.
