What this checks
Technical availability: whether the domain is registered and whether anything is currently using the handle. That’s the part you can find out in seconds, and it’s the part that most often kills a name.
What it doesn’t check
Trademarks. A free handle tells you nothing about whether you can legally trade under a name, and we won’t pretend otherwise. If the name matters, a trademark search is a separate, worthwhile job.
It also can’t tell you whether a name is any good. That one’s still yours.
Do it before the logo
The cost of finding out a name is unusable rises sharply once there’s artwork, packaging or a deck involved. A check takes a few seconds and is worth doing while the name is still a candidate rather than a decision.
Bring two names
The single most useful habit: carry a second candidate through the check. It turns “it’s taken” from a setback into a choice.
